Writing to Get Things Done® (WGTD)

Want Productivity?
We teach employees how to meet important deadlines and keep projects on target by Writing to Get Things Done®. Productivity soars when people clearly communicate what needs to get done and when. As organizations create a critical mass of people writing to get things done, the results are amazing.

Course Description
This popular seminar focuses on improving productivity – using writing as a powerful tool for getting things done.  Clear writing is clear thinking framed for the reader using plain English.

The course focuses on improving participants’ actual on-the-job writing skills – writing clear, easy-to-read emails, letters, and reports. Employees learn how to write quickly and effectively, saving time for themselves and their readers. They will impress others with their ability to get to the point quickly, clearly, and concisely!

Target Audience
This is not a remedial writing program for “problem writers.”  This course is for everyone who uses writing to get things done. This seminar is a must for architects, attorneys, analysts, engineers, contract specialists, and managerial and professional staff whose job requires effective written and email communications.

Course Length: One-day: 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Course Objectives
The skills/concepts provided in this program teach people to present their ideas clearly in all business communications, regardless of length or medium, including letters, memos, reports, voice mail and e-mail messages.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Clarify thoughts before writing.
  • Separate the readers’ needs from the writer’s needs.
  • Use the inverted-pyramid principle of organization.
  • Use a listing paragraph format to highlight key ideas.
  • Use the language of getting things done vs. business speak.
  • Develop a professional tone that encourages cooperation.
  • Use our three models of organization for all business writing/emails.
  • Write technical information to non-technical people

Program Design
Writing to Get Things Done® is a learning and development process, not a training event. It consists of the following elements:

The following activities ensure mastery of Writing to Get Things Done®.

Pre-seminar Analysis: Two weeks before the seminar, each participant emails us a writing sample for review—this can be an email, letter, memo, or report.  We suggest ways to highlight key ideas and simplify the organizational style.  This analysis and feedback prepares participants with specific writing skills to work on and makes the transfer of learning quick and easy.

Seminar Session: The focus is on improving participants’ actual on-the-job writing skills.  Participants are amazed at how quick and easy it is to rewrite their pre-seminar writing samples using our feedback as a guide to write more clearly.

Follow-up Support: In keeping with our commitment to offer a learning and development process, not a training event, we offer a number of free value-added resources and opportunities to assist seminar participants to become more productive on the job. Upon course completion, we invite participants to support their new writing skills with these learning activities:
